Chapter 832 The Evidence
Chapter 832 The Evidence
“Mr. Newton, as per your instructions, I’ve assigned tasks to Ms. Mellor and downloaded the surveillance footage from the night before the meeting,” Queenie reported before handing the flash drive to Charles respectfully and stepping aside.
Charles promptly plugged the flash drive into the computer, his expression growing colder. as he watched the video on the screen.
All the surveillance cameras in the Newton Group were equipped with night vision capabilities, so it was clear to see that the two figures were Lana and Sissi,
They stealthily approached Whitney’s desk, fiddled around with her computer for a while, and then took away the printed documents she had left on her desk.
As it turned out, Charles had grown suspicious when Whitney said the proposal was missing.
For a while, the latter had spent almost all her time working on the project, whether at the office or home.
Moreover, based on Charles’ understanding of Whitney, she was certainly not the type to be careless. If her documents were missing, the only explanation was that someone had tampered with them behind her back.
“Don’t act rashly on this matter for now,” Charles instructed as he turned off the computer screen. “Continue to monitor those individuals, but don’t arouse any suspicion.”
“Yes, Mr. Newton.”
With that, Queenie left the office, unable to curb the growing sense of perplexity.
Hmm… Generally speaking, there are only two reasons a CEO would take special care of an ordinary employee. The first reason is that he has become smitten with her, while the second is that she pulled strings to get into the company. From what I’ve observed recently, it doesn’t seem like Whitney’s related to any big shots. If any, the rumors revolve around her and the assistant, Isaac. Besides, after my private interactions with her, it’s pretty clear she isn’t the kind of woman who’d resort to unscrupulous methods to climb the social ladder. That means there’s only one possibility left-Mr. Newton likes Whitney! Otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken the trouble of dismissing the previous manager, transferring me from the branch office, and entrusting Whitney to my care. There’s one thing I don’t understand, though… Why doesn’t Mr. Newton assign Whitney to a large department if he fancies her? After all, working in the logistics department offers little room for advancement and minimal contact with the CEO…
The next second, everything suddenly became clear to Queenie.
Oh! Mr. Newton is doing this to protect Whitney! The office gossip is so rampant that if he showed favoritism toward Whitney, it’d undoubtedly draw criticism from others. When that happens, more people will pick on her, making her days at the company even more difficult.
Having understood the situation, Queenie couldn’t help but shake her head as she returned to her office.
Meanwhile, Whitney was drenched in sweat after delivering the purchased items to the respective departments.
She had been busy with work all afternoon and couldn’t even find the time to have some water.
As soon as the last item was delivered, Whitney stepped into the elevator and leaned against the wall, so exhausted that she failed to notice who was sharing the ride with her.
“Could you please press the button for the fifteenth floor for me? Thank you,” she uttered.
As it turned out, the person standing behind her was none other than Charles!
Having pressed the elevator button for the fifteenth floor, Charles silently stepped in front of Whitney, only to see the exhaustion written all over her face.
His gaze might have been too intense because when Whitney opened her eyes, she immediately looked away and straightened up, making sure to put some distance between them.
Upon seeing the fear in her eyes, Charles asked, “Am I really that scary?”
Whether it’s at the house or the office, she always looks at me with a hint of terror… Why, though? Do I look like I’m about to devour her?
Hearing that, Whitney gave an awkward smile, her palms slightly sweaty. “No, you aren’t scary, Mr. Newton. I was only startled because I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”

Whitney was ready to flee when the elevator reached the fifteenth floor, but to her surprise, Charles followed behind her.
Needless to say, the woman was shocked.
Oh, my goodness… The previous gossip about me and Isaac had already given me a massive headache. I’ll lose my mind if the staff spreads rumors about me and Charles this time.
With that thought in mind, she walked briskly ahead, determined to keep her distance from the man.
She might have been exhausted before, but now, all she could feel was fear and anxiety.
It didn’t take long before the employees in the logistics department noticed Charles’ arrival. Those who were slacking off only seconds ago immediately went back to focusing on their tasks at hand.
Having learned her lesson from her previous attempt of chatting Charles up alone, Lana knew better than to overstep her boundaries again, no matter how much she wanted to impress him.
As for Charles, he merely walked up to Whitney, lingered around for two minutes, and then. left without a word.
Everyone in the logistics department was dumbfounded.
Huh? Did Mr. Newton only drop by for an inspection? Are there no other work arrangements?
As soon as Charles was gone, the office area erupted into chaos.
Several employees who considered themselves somewhat attractive began to play the comparison game. “I think Mr. Newton was looking at me just now. It must be because makeup today is beyond excellent,” one of them piped up.
The moment she uttered those words, the others teased and ridiculed her.
“Oh, come on. You’re overthinking it. His gaze probably only happened to sweep past you. Anyway, his sudden appearance is most likely because of that person…” another employee reasoned before turning toward Whitney, who had buried herself in her work.
Lana quickly joined the conversation, her eyes full of disdain. “Who does she think she is? Does she seriously believe Mr. Newton would give her a second glance? If she hadn’t messed things up, our department’s workload wouldn’t have suddenly doubled.”
Argh! I’ve nearly worn out my legs from trying to purchase all the necessary parts for the large equipment this afternoon… In any case, I noticed Charles’ gaze linger on Whitney for a moment earlier. Even though he looked away rather quickly, I could still sense he was interested in her… In what way am I inferior to Whitney? Why does she always get all the good things? This is so unfair!
Later that evening, the sun had already set when Whitney finally returned to the Newton. residence.
To her surprise, Charles’ flashy luxury car was parked at the intersection leading to the house, and he was sitting inside.
Upon seeing him, Whitney hesitated before deciding to knock on the window.
Charles promptly rolled down the car window, her face reflected in his sunglasses.
“Why aren’t you going into the house?” Whitney asked.
Could he be waiting for me?
“Get in the car,” Charles replied.
The man’s tone left no room for refusal, so Whitney had no choice but to comply.
As the luxury car made a U-turn and cruised down the road, the sound of rushing wind instantly filled Whitney’s ears. She was, however, still clueless about where Charles was. taking her.
She didn’t know if it was because she was too tired, but not long after the drive started, she leaned back in her seat and fell asleep, her breathing steady and even.
Seeing Whitney sound asleep, Charles closed all the car windows.
In truth, he wasn’t sure why he didn’t enter the house, either. Could it be because Whitney. hadn’t returned?
Despite not having a definite answer, Charles knew he felt a certain emptiness when the latter wasn’t around.
To make matters worse, Whitney had recently been going to bed pretty late and would always spend her nights resting on the sofa. Without her by his side, it was undeniably a sudden change that Charles was struggling to adjust to.
