Chapter 62
As I stretched my hand toward the hidden box, my fingertips just grazing its smooth handle, I heard the door creak open
Oh no. I gasped, pressing a hand against my lips to stop myself from making so much noise.
My heart stuttered and I froze in place.
Someone had come in.
And I knew that if I got caught, I was as good as dead.
I didn't expect Marcos to be back so soon and now I was in trouble, big trouble.
I held my breath, willing myself to melt into the shadows as I slowly retracted my hand from the box.
It was a good thing that I had bent under the table to check out the box. If not, I would have been pulled towards Marcos for whatever punishment he might give me. The footsteps got closer and I pressed my palm tightly against my lips.
I couldn't risk moving too quickly just so I won't catch their attention
My heart raced and my palms were starting to get sweaty
"I thought I saw someone enter here," the person said, their feet a few meters away from where I was.
I recognized who that voice belonged to, Davien. He was a man who worked for my father, known for his loyalty to Marcos and his cold, perceptive eyes. Nothing could miss his gaze.
Oh shit, I'm doomed.
I felt the blood drain from my face as his footsteps approached and I shut my eyes tight as if that would stop him from seeing me.
Each step echoed in my ears loudly.
I pressed myself against the wall, barely daring to breathe as he scanned the room, his gaze sweeping dangerously close to where I was hidden.
I could feel myself getting attacked as I tried to steady my breathing, my legs trembling in fear.
Please don't see me, please don't see-
My wish seemed to be ignored when something fell next to me. I'mMaking him turn his attention towards me.
In one dreadful moment, his eyes locked onto me and my face blanched.
was doomed.
fis mouth curved into a smile, but it held no warmth, his eyes glistening evilly.
What are you doing here, Katrina And hiding at that? Are you happening to be playing hide and seek inside the boss' Hffice?" Davien asked, that same sarcastic smile remaining on his lips. I dropped something. I lied, pushing up to my feet.
Davien's eyes swept over me, and I prayed that he believed my

I had no idea what to say as a cover-up, I couldn't think of a particular thing to set him off.
His brows were raised as he waited for me to speak, his arms folded across his chest.
I swallowed hard, trying to think of an excuse, but my mind went blank.
Instead, I straightened my back and met his gaze, trying to appear unbothered, despite the thundering of my pulse.
"I was looking for my father. I thought he might be in here.
It was a lie, an obvious lie.
But acting suspicious would only make him more suspicious than he was already.
"Is that so?" He took a step closer, his eyes turning to slits..
"Funny, because he was clear about not wanting anyone snooping around here."
He was clearly suspicious of me and I tried not to flinch.
so I shouldn't be too suspicious.
I had to control the way I was acting. I didn't come here to do anything, so
"You're here as well, are you not?" I asked, meeting his gaze head-on.
Davien let out a low chuckle and my lips pulled into a frown.
I didn't understand why he was laughing, so I stood there awkwardly.
"I came here because I saw a rat snooping around. Now, why are you here?" He growled out
I needed to find a way to escape this situation.
"I was just curious. Didn't know curiosity was a crime."
"Oh, curiosity has its limits," he said, his gaze sliding to the box. And sometimes it gets people into trouble,"
I was hoping that he wouldn't see that, but it seemed that it was already too late.
I followed his gaze, biting back a wave of panic. The box which I thought I had kicked away was lying right next to my leg. staring at us.
"What's in the box?" His tone was too smooth, too knowing.
He knew.
"Nothing that concerns you," I managed, though I knew my voice had wavered.
I was going to get caught at this point, and my heart racing
The corners of his lips pulled into an evil smile and he clicked his tongue.
"You think you're clever, don't you? Showing up after all this time, pretending to the good daughter." He reached out, wrapping his fingers around my wrist. "Let's see what your father has to say about this."

What?
He shouldn't bring in Marcos.
"Let me go!" I yelled, but the fear in my voice was too loud to hr covered.
I wanted to pull away, but his hold was unyielding, his fingers wrapped tightly around my wrist.
My mind raced, trying to think of a way out, but I was already being dragged out of the study and down the hallway.
Oh, 110
I was fucked. Seriously fucked
I just came back today and I was already caught snooping around.
Marcos's men stood around every corner, each one glancing our way as we passed, and I knew my chances of escape we
gone.
I could have waited for when they were out on a mission or something,
When my chances of getting caught were slim.
But impatience had gotten the best out of me, and now this has happened.

We stopped in front of a heavy wooden dor that led to my father's second office, the one where people were allowed to come into.
Davien knocked twice, and the door swung open
Marcos sat behind his desk, raising his eyes to meet mine.
His expression darkened when he saw me and the way I was being held.
Something flickered in his face and I swallowed hard once more,
It hadn't even been a day and I had done something,
Maybe I shouldn't have come home.
"What is the meaning of this?" Marcos asked as his gaze shifted from me to his man.
It seemed as if we had interrupted him when he was busy and Marcos hated when that happened.
I was just about to say nothing was up and pull Davien away when he gripped my wrist tightly.
"She was snooping in your study," he replied, tugging me closer as if to prove his point.
"I thought you'd want to handle this personally." Davien pushed me forward and I stumbled, rubbing my aching wrist.
As the daughter of the don, my position should be higher than his.
But yet, he seemed to be in a position to pull me around that way
That's just because everyone knew that Marcos didn't value me.
I straightened my back, taking a step closer to him.
Marcos's gaze sharpened, and his lips pressed into a thin line. He leaned back in his chair, his eyes assessing me, cold and

unforgiving
"Is that true, Katrina? Were you snooping around in my study?" he asked the question like he didn't already know the
answer.
But he just wanted to hear what I had to say.
I wanted to lie, to deny it, but I knew he'd see through it.
Marcos always had a way of prying the truth out of me, one way or another.
He's only asking just to test me
But I knew I couldn't tell the truth, so I had to say something slightly believable.
"I was just looking for you," I muttered, trying to keep my voice steady.
didn't realize it was such a crime,"
Oh, I knew, I knew all right. But what could I do?
"Looking for me!" His eyebrow arched, skepticism clear in his expression. "In a place you know is off-limits?"
I glanced away, unable to hold his gaze any longer. "I didn't mean to overstep. I just... wanted to talk."
Another lie
Just to cover up a lie I seemed to be lying endlessly.
Marcos leaned forward, his voice lowering. "Talk about what?"
My mind scrambled for something, anything, that would sound reasonable.
But I couldn't come
up
with any
Did I want to talk about how he had left me with his enemy after got kidnapped?
Or how he had acted like I wasn't important the night we met after that.
Or how he had tried to kill me.
I had a lot of things I wanted to talk about.
But I said nothing, I merely swallowed before lying once more.
"I... I wanted to apologize for not coming back with information concerning Silas like you asked me to. I know I disappointed you, and I thought..." I trailed off, unable to finish. Even to me, the excuse sounded weak But I couldn't even think of something better.
Marcos's eyes narrowed further and I knew he wasn't buying it
Even I wouldn't buy it.
"You're lying, Katrina. You may have learned to deceive others, but don't think for a second you can deceive me. He stood: to his full height, and I raised my head to meet his gaze.
"But father-" I started to say but he cut me off.

"You were snooping breause you wanted something. What were you looking for?"
He knew it all already, but how much did he know!
Was he certain or was he just guessing, waiting for me to rattle myself
"I wasn't looking for anything." The denial slipped out, but my heart was racing, each beat a countdown to whatever punishment he had in mind.
Marcos chuckled darkly. "If there's one thing I despise, it's dishonesty He gestured to Davien and he grabbed me one mire
"Wait. What was happening." I struggled to get out of his hold but once again, it was futile.
"Lock her in the basement. We'll see if a little time down there refreshes her memory."
Not the basement. Please, God no.
Memories I had been suppressing rushed back and tears filled my eyes.
Panic spiked through me. "Wait-no!" I tried to pull back, but his grip was too strong, and within seconds, I was being dragged from the room, the door slamming shut behind us.
The hallway blurred as I struggled, my pleas echoing off the wails. "Please, let me explain! I wasn't doing anything wrong!
But my words fell on deaf ears as I was hauled down a set of stairs, the air growing colder and damper with each st
step
The basement was dimly lit, the faint scent of mold thick in the air, and dread curled around me as he pushed me into cell, the heavy metal door slamming shut behind me.
In the darkness, I sank to the floor, my heart pounding.
I had come back to prove my loyalty, to try to help Silas, but now. now I was trapped, and any hope of escape was fading
fast.
