Chapter 127
Vanessa
The ride to my father's house is silent for the first few minutes and each time that I look over at Dominic, he still looks troubled. I still assume it's because of the reaction from his parents. I try my best to mind my own business but it starts getting to me as this involves my father as well.
"Hey," I say to him, shifting in my seat.
"What is it?" His tone is just a little irritated but I still understand.
"That was scary back there."
He huffs. "I know. Imagine how I felt when they said all that."
"So... what will you do now?" I ask.
He sighs heavily. "I was thinking about that and I think I have something."
"You do?" My eyes widen.
He nods with hesitation. "I'm still not yet sure about it but it's the only thing I can think of."
I hold my breath, wondering what he has planned but he doesn't say it, which leaves me even more curious.
"Well, you'll only find out later," he says.
I lean back in my seat, feeling a little frustrated as I can't figure it out on my own.
We get to my father's house fifteen minutes later and I didn't even bother to call him to tell him that I was already on the way since he would still be home.
He quickly steps out and walks over to the other side to open the door for me. My heart flutters as it seems he's no longer doing this because he's my husband and we should put on a show, but because he's the man who's the father of this precious baby.
Placing my hand in his, he leads me inside as he says, "This reminds me of something. I spoke to your dad about him moving in with us."
"Really? You did that?" I stop in my tracks.
He nods with disappointment, "Yes, I did and I thought he would agree to it, but he prefers staying here. He thinks he'll be a burden to us."
"That's not true."
"That's what I said to him. He still said no."
Amazed by his efforts, I look to the side, my lips curving into a smile. I would have never thought he would do such a thing.
We get inside the house and I hear a few voices, making me furrow my eyebrows as I look at Dominic.
"Does your dad have visitors or something?" he asks.
"That sounds like it."
As we get closer, the voices sound familiar and I tighten my grip on Dominic's hand.Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.
"What is it?" he asks.
"Uncle Jerry's here with his wife."
"Really?"
"Yes.
"You don't seem too happy about it."
"I'm not."
I narrow my eyes, walking even faster to get to the living room.
Just as we turn at the corner, I see him with his wife, sitting on one couch and my father sitting alone.
He's the first to see me and he rises to his feet. "My daughter, you're here."
I force a smile, glancing at my uncle and aunt. "We would have come sooner, but we were stuck in traffic."
"It's alright," he assures me.
We hug each other and as he hugs Dominic, I glance at my uncle and his wife, who smile at me like we've stayed in touch this whole time. "It's so lovely to see you again, Vanessa," Uncle Jerry says.
"Is it?" I raise an eyebrow.
They chuckle awkwardly.
Dominic pulls away from my father's embrace and holds onto my arms as he subtly shakes his head, the look in his eyes asking me to tone it down.
I sigh deeply, sitting down with him on the other side.
"I'm sorry we couldn't make it to the wedding," Uncle Jerry says.
"Don't worry about it." I force a smile.
"You know, your husband is even more handsome in person!" his wife says. "I only see him on billboards and what's that expensive cologne brand called?"
"Aurum Elite," Dominic says, trying to be part of the conversation.
"You're right about that." She smiles, her eyes never leaving his sight.
Dominic
Though I was curious about what Uncle Jerry was like, I kind of regret it now because his wife can't take her eyes off me. I know I'm good looking but doing this in the presence of everyone just feels wrong. To get rid of her lingering gaze on Mr, Vanessa changes the subject when she says, "When did you get here?"
She looks away. "It's not too long ago."
"She's right," Uncle Jerry chimes in. "It's only been 10 minutes. I should've come with your cousins but they're busy. We just couldn't wait as soon as my brother here told us the news. That's why we came so soon to find a way forward."
"It's like I told you, nothing can be done about this," my father says, his tone sorrowful.
"I'm not talking about a solution to help you live longer," Uncle Jerry arrogantly corrects him. "Just as you've said, there's nothing that can be done to stop the worst from happening and you have less than a year left. What will happen to the company you've been working so hard to grow?" Uncle Jerry's statement shocks me so much that my jaw drops for a moment and as for Vanessa, she instantly lets go of my hand, twisting her face in disgust as she is triggered.
"How dare you say such a thing?" she yells at her uncle, rising to her fee.
I can already tell she's about to lash out, so I reach for her hand so I can calm her down, but she pulls away.
"No!" she says to me, keeping her
narrowed eyes on both of them. "Listen here, both of you. It's now clear to me why you came here. My dad's only ever been a kind and honest man. That's why even times like these, he wishes to be close to his family, but here you are, only thinking of yourselves and what
you stand to gain."
I try to reach for her hand again but she pulls away as she continues to lash out, her voice trembling with emotion.
I look over at my father-in-law and he just looks hurt as he faces the floor while keeping his head low.
As for Uncle Jerry and his wife, they seem like they have a few things to say in their defense but Vanessa doesn't give them that chance as her voice only gets louder, which makes my hot race faster. I don't want this for her.
"There's no point of you being here if you only came to show how selfish you are! Get out!" she says to them.
"How dare you?" Uncle Jerry glares at her. "You're just a child."
"And you're the people hurting my dad! Get out of this house and don't come back!"
Uncle Jerry looks over at my dad and says, "Are you just going to sit there and allow this to happen?"
"You heard my daughter," my father-in-law says with pain in his voice.
They both look at each other and sneer.
"Whatever," Uncle Jerry says, leading the way out.
While I keep my eyes on my father-in-law, Vanessa storms off to the stairs and I instantly go after her.
I call out to her as she runs up the stairs but she doesn't stop or look back.
It's only when she gets in the hallway that I finally get to her. I firmly hold onto her wrist and pull her close to me to hold her against my chest.
"Let me go!" she yells quietly.
"Listen to me. Calm down."
"How could I do that after what happened?" Her eyes turn teary and she smiles painfully. "How could they just say that? How could they be so selfish?"
"Hey, calm down."
Tears rush down her cheeks and I press my lips together for a moment, wondering what I can do for her.
Wiping her tears, I place my hand at the back of her neck and kiss her on the lips. She doesn't kiss me back, but that's okay.
I pull away and she seems a little
shocked by my actions, but she holds onto the collar of my shirt,
making me kiss her again and this
time, she kisses me back and it lasts for a few seconds. As our lips lock, I feel even her breath tremble but it soon fades away until it's all back to normal.
After pulling away from her lips, I lead her back downstairs, joining my father-in-law and he still looks hurt.
"You're back, my children. Let's have something to eat."
He says it's so easily but I know he's hurting inside.
I tighten my hold on Vanessa's hand but the look in her eyes tells me she just wants to be with her father, so I let go of her hand and she rushes to him as they walk together.
Following behind them, I keep thinking about the kiss a few minutes ago. She didn't ask why I was doing it. Is it because she knows the reason behind it?
