Chapter 14
Scott stopped in his tracks.
He rarely spoke with Naomi on the phone. She knew that he was always busy, so she always contacted Jay if she needed something. She rarely called Scott.
Scott usually did not look for Naomi either. He was also often on a business trip, only returning home once every while. Even when he was home, they rarely interacted.
He could say that Naomi’s face was a blur in his memories of the past three years. It wasn’t until that night when she brought up the divorce, looking at him gently. Her face finally imprinted onto his memory. He finally remembered her voice.
She was different from the others.
At that moment, listening to her speak on the phone, he could imagine what she looked like. How she was smiling calmly, and how gentle she was.
It was interrupted by a man’s voice. He could hear feelings in the man’s tone. Romantic feelings.
Scott stopped in his tracks. He was surprised that he stopped. He stood there with his hands in his pocket, holding onto his phone. He looked ahead into the woods.
How odd! He suddenly recalled that day when he returned home. She was standing there waiting for him, smiling at him.
His heart fluttered.
Just like that day, his heart accidentally fluttered.
Everyone was silent. Clara and Jasper looked at Scott with bewilderment on their face. Even Maya was stunned.
Only Edith furrowed her brows a little before continuing forward. Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Maya blinked her huge eyes. She did not know why but she subconsciously glanced at the towering Scott in front of her. Seeing him stopping in his tracks, she asked Naomi on the call, “Aunt Naomi, who are you with? I heard an uncle’s voice. Who is he?”
Everyone heard Maya’s innocent question and they immediately came to their senses, continuing their walk, but their expressions changed.
Naomi was still in Charles’s arms. She furrowed her brows and closed her eyes for a while, trying to bear the pain.
Her nose bumped into Charles’s chest. It hurt a little.
Charles noticed Naomi’s reaction. He was about to ask her if she was okay when Maya’s voice rang
out.
Naomi heard Maya and realized she was still in Charles‘ arms. She got up and said politely, “Thank you.”
Then, she picked up her phone and walked over to the side. “He’s a friend. Maya, I’ve been quite busy recently, but I promise you I’ll keep my word. When I’m less busy, I’ll come and see you,
alright?”
Crashing into Charles made Naomi hesitate no more. She gave Maya her word. She was going to keep her promise.
Once she helped Charles out, she would head to Willowstown to look for Maya. She could still take a day or two off.
“Haha! Really? I’ll hold you to it! I won’t forget about it!”
“Haha! I promise. Once I’m done, I’ll call you beforehand and we’ll plan a time together. How about that?”
“Hmm! Okay!”
“Okay, I have to deal with something. I’ll hang up soon. Maya, be good. Listen to your mother.”
“Okay! I’ll be good!”
After talking to Maya, Naomi had a plan. She was going to find time to make some pastries for Maya and send them over to her. However, it was a little far away, so she had to find a solution. She thought about it as she hung up.
Charles was standing by the side waiting for her. He looked at her and made sure that she was not hurt. Her nose was a little red from bumping into him a moment ago. It was as if she just cried. He felt
sorry.
When he saw that she hung up, he walked over. “I’m sorry, I was too hasty.”
Naomi heard Charles. She put her thoughts aside and shook her head. “No, thank you for saving me.
Then, she looked at the time. “Do you live in the city?”
Charles nodded. “Yes, I’m going home now. Once I’ve planned my schedufe, I’ll give you a call.”
“Alright.”
Charles bade Naomi farewell before hailing a taxi. Naomi stood under the streetlamp, thinking about the call she had with Maya.
It was perhaps the monthly family dinner and Maya did not see her, so she called. From what Maya said, Naomi knew that Scott did not tell Maya about their divorce. It was only normal. They could not possibly tell a child about their divorce.
Furthermore, their families still had a relationship with one another. Although they were already divorced, they could not possibly just draw the line.
Naomi smiled. They were divorced, but they were not strangers.
Charles, in the taxi, looked at Naomi through the rearview mirror. He heard the child’s voice on the. phone Aunt Naomi.
Should be some child from the Lawsons.
His family and the Lawsons had some connection too. He attended Edith’s birthday parties before. He also met Scott before too. He might be a little aloof, but he had a good character.
From what he heard from other people, Scott was a great guy. While never would have thought that Scott and Naomi would get a divorce, he was grateful to Scott.
Thanks to Scott, he had an opportunity.
Charles retracted his gaze and smiled. His eyes twinkled.
Gradually, the skies got dark.
The Lawsons who were on a walk returned home. Once they were home, Scott followed Edith to the study,
