Deasy fell silent for a moment. Once again, she took a deeper breath than before, as if releasing the burden that had been gnawing at her heart.
Her hand didn’t stop rubbing her father’s tombstone repeatedly. Acting as if the person who had been gone for so long was right in front of her, listening to what she was saying.
“Deasy has committed a grave mistake, Pa. How can I redeem myself?”
“Just repent, Des. Confess your sins to God,” Diana chimed in again. Then she averted her gaze, acting indifferent. Even though her daughter seemed annoyed because her words were constantly interrupted.
“Many staff members lost their livelihoods because of what Deasy did. I swear to God, I regret it. But… Papa, don’t worry, I’ve apologized. I’ve confessed my sins to Mr. Andreas as well. I’ve apologized to him for my past actions, which were also Papa’s. I hope, after this, there will be no more misunderstandings. And… one more thing. There’s something I want to tell Papa, and I believe it’s good news that needs to be shared.”
Deasy then pulled something out of her bag and showed what she was holding, as if her father was right there with her.
“Look, Pa. This is the result of a baby ultrasound in Deasy’s belly. Soon, you’ll become a grandfather. And that outspoken woman in front of me will soon become a grandmother. She’ll be even more talkative when my baby is born. I can already imagine how Mama will be with a grandchild.”
Diana sighed. She didn’t like being called talkative by her daughter, even though it was true.
“Just let Mama talk and blabber on. Because when Mama talks like this, many guys fall for it and chase after me. Mama never had a boyfriend leave her, let alone be dumped by a guy she liked.”
“Ugh, Mama is so irritating. She never backs down. I don’t get it.”
Diana laughed. She deliberately teased and made Deasy angry like this. Rather than seeing her daughter sad or even crying, she preferred to see Deasy getting mad at her like this.
“Alright, continue. Tell your Papa about how you seduced your boss.”
“Oh my God, Mama. Your mouth has no filter.”
“Gosh, why use a filter? It’s just the two of us.”
No matter what, Deasy couldn’t help but wonder why her mom was so mean. She seemed to enjoy belittling her own unlucky fate. Instead of offering support, she was relentlessly teasing her.
“Pa, why did you even marry Mama?” Deasy asked deliberately in front of the tombstone. “You must have had incredible patience to have a wife who loves to bully her own child like this. Just so you know, Pa, the reason Deasy didn’t want to live with you guys was because of this. Mama really enjoys insulting her own child. Fortunately, I still love you. Otherwise, I would have crossed Deasy off the family list.”
“It’s the other way around, Des! Besides, Mama is also lucky you didn’t live with us. It would’ve been chaotic. Plus, you eat so much. You even get possessed sometimes. Really lazy.”
Diana laughed and playfully pinched her daughter’s arm. No matter how much she teased her, her daughter remained dear to her heart.
“Pa… I’m sorry, Deasy,” the long-haired woman continued, extending her previous statement. “Deasy made a big mistake, and I’m not sure if it was a mistake or not, since it happened twice. But seriously, it wasn’t intentional, Pa, that Deasy ended up sleeping with Lucas. And now I’m pregnant. I promise, Pa, I love him. I love you, Pa. In fact, yesterday he seriously asked me to marry him. We should’ve been getting married soon. But it seems that God didn’t allow it. The proof is, we’re separated now.”
Deasy then looked up, holding back her tears. She had promised herself not to lament the tragic fate that had befallen her.
“In two days, the guy who got me pregnant will marry his fiancée, Pa. If there hadn’t been any problems, I should’ve been the bride. Just so you know, his name is Lucas Orion Morales. Yes, he’s Mr. Andreas Morales’s son. He’s your friend, Pa. It’s such a small world. But not as small as a moringa leaf. I never expected to be involved with the child of someone who was once close to and a rival of you, Pa.”
This time, Deasy took another deep breath. She purposely smiled and continued speaking.
“Why didn’t you, back then, set me up with Mr. Andreas’s son? It would’ve been perfect. Deasy wouldn’t have had to search for a partner. After all, Lucas is handsome, Pa. He’s also kind. It’s just that I was careless, that’s why he got angry and didn’t want to know me anymore.”
Diana was touched by the last words Deasy said about her late husband. Without the need for explanation, she felt deep sadness in her daughter’s current state. That’s why she reached out, gently patting Deasy’s shoulder to reassure her and prevent her from drowning in sorrow.
“It’s okay, dear.”
Deasy nodded and smiled again, assuring her mom that she was okay.
“Papa, don’t worry up there. Deasy is fine. Deasy is strong. I’ve always been a strong and resilient young lady. Being dumped before marriage is just ordinary. Nothing to worry about, really. What’s important is that I still have Mama, Veronica, and Sean. They are the people who have kept me going all this time.”
Deasy declared this statement while gently rubbing her father’s tombstone again, making sure she would be okay after this.
“I’m strong, Pa. Very strong. I promise to endure and stay strong through all of this. You can rest peacefully in heaven. From now on, whenever I have the time, I’ll visit regularly. Next time, before I give birth, I’ll come here again.”
After pouring her heart out at length, Deasy lifted her face, kissed her father’s tombstone, and then stood up from where she had been sitting with her mother. They scattered some flowers first and then decided to leave the cemetery grounds as the day was becoming hot.
“You don’t have to be sad all the time,” Diana tried to provide support. “Don’t be afraid, Mama is right here with you.”
“I know.”
“So, where do you want to go now?”
“I just want to go straight home. Veronica is coming to the apartment later this afternoon.”
“She visits you so often.”
Deasy nodded.
“Yes, Veronica is coming to bring a dress later.”
“A dress? For what?” Diana was quite curious.
“A dress for an invitation. I can’t wear it for swimming, can I?”
“I know! What kind of invitation is it for?”
“It’s an invitation to Lucas’s wedding. So, I’ve decided to attend Lucas’s wedding the day after tomorrow.”
“Are you serious? You want to go to Lucas’s wedding? Were you invited?”
“Even if I wasn’t invited, I’ll still go. I want to congratulate Lucas and his new partner in person.”
Diana shook her head. Seeing Deasy’s strong determination, it was clear that her daughter couldn’t be stopped or persuaded.
“Alright, it’s up to you, what you want to do and how you want to do it. Mama’s only request is that at Lucas’s wedding party, you remain dignified. Don’t suddenly get possessed and cause a scene. Watch out! Mama doesn’t want to hear any news like that.”
Deasy nodded, agreeing to her mother’s request.Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
“Alright, got it. You’re so strict! It’s like I’m a little kid being reminded all the time. So, are you going home now, or what?”
Diana shook her head. She had some business to attend to after this.
“I’m going to stop by somewhere first. I have some things to take care of today too. So I can relax tomorrow.”
“Alright, then. As long as Mama is careful.”
“You too, Des. Just be cautious and don’t cause any trouble.”
“Okay, Ma. Okay.”
They both decided to leave. Deasy chose to head straight home, while Diana had to continue her journey to finish her errands.
