One Night 98
Chapter 98 Edwin
The door swung on its hinges in Audrey's wake, leaving me sitting there, stunned and confused.
The sudden silence was deafening, broken only by the soft ticking of the clock on my mantle. I bolted up and crossed over to the window, where I could see her slender form running down the street, her hair streaming behind her like a dark banner in the wind.
"What the hell was that about?" I muttered to myself, pressing my forehead against the cool glass. Audrey disappeared around a corner without so much as a glance over her shoulder she hadn't even taken her art store supplies with her, and her latte and c**n roll sat half-eaten on the coffee table.
"You scared her off, idiot," my wolf growled.
I shook my head, my reflection frowning back at me in the glass "How? I was just curious about her hair. I thought I saw some blonde roots showing through." I said.
Still, her sudden reaction was surprising, really. Blonde hair was all the rage among Audrey's age group, and her status as a human made things difficult enough already. Why would she dye it black, if having blonde hair would have helped her socially?
And, more importantly, why react so strongly to a simple question?
Maybe she likes being different, my wolf suggested. "Maybe it was a reminder that she's not as different as she likes to pretend to be."
I couldn't argue with that. Audrey was certainly... unique.
Still, I couldn't shake the feg of disappointment that settled in my chest, heavy and uncomfortable. She had left so abruptly, and I couldn't help but wonder if I had done something wrong.
Sighing, I turned around with my hands on my hips. The couch was still indented where she had just been sitting and I could still feel her lips on my neck.
We had come so close to... Well, maybe it was for the best. I'd been losing control around her lately, but if we slept together again, it could cause... problems.
It was then that I caught sight of myself in the mirror hanging by the door. That was when I noticed the uncomfortable tightness in my pants-***n it. Our close proximity earlier had clearly affected me more than I had wanted it to.
My wolf chuckled, a sound that reverberated through my body. Sexually frustrated, are we?" he teased.
I groaned, running a hand through my hair. "Shut up." I growled storming over to the kitchen to clean up Audrey's half- caten food.
But my wolf wasn't wrong. It was true; I hadn't had a single one-night stand since that night with Audrey. Nothing else seemed to measure up. And then, to add a magical night at the planetarium on top of it... "I need to get myself under control," I said more to myself than my wolf. "Keep my head clear."
But it was easier said than done. Especially with Audrey's scent still lingering in the air, a tantalizing mix of vanilla and spice. It was nearly impossible not to breathe in deeply, as though I could inhale a part of her by doing so.
"Lovesick," my wolf cooed. "Absolutely lovesick..."

The next few days passed in a blur of work and restless nights. My dreams were filled with flashes of silver and the feel of Audrey's warm skin against mine, and my mornings were filled with uncomfortable realizations as I pulled the sheets back from my body.
I felt like a teenage boy all over again, crushing on a girl in my class. My nights were consumed with her, and with each passing day, those nights bled into the mornings, the afternoons the evenings. Audrey consumed every part of me, and I couldn't decide if I was bitter or glad for it.
But before I knew it, the day of Claudia's brunch had arrived-and for the first time in days, my mind was on something. other than that beautiful human girl.
I pulled up the pebbled driveway of Claudia's sprawling mansion, letting out a deep sigh as I put the car in park. The bright, beautiful estate was always one of my favorite places to visit, with its large, airy windows and vibrant gardens.
But this was the last place I wanted to be today.
Still. I couldn't bring myself to turn Claudia down. She had always been kind to me, even when I didn't deserve it. If anything. I was here for her.
"You know who else will be here, my wolf reminded me. His voice was filled with disgust, a disgust that I could feel deep in my bones.
Fiona
The thought of seeing her made my stomach churn. But maybe this was for the best. I could finally end things once and for all
"Today's the day," I told my wolf as I straightened my tie and checked my reflection in the rearview mirror. "I'm going to tell Fiona that I don't intend to honor this engagement she's forced me into." My wolf practically purred with satisfaction. "Good. It's about time. Maybe then you can pursue something real with Audrey.
I nearly choked. "Audrey is still my student," I reminded my wolf, trying to ignore the way my heart raced at the mere mention of her name. "We could get in a lot of trouble if we got caught, It's not happening" "Maybe that's why she keeps running away," my wolf mused. "She's exercising impressive self-control. All the more reason to pursue her, no?"
Perhaps my wolf was right; Audrey's behavior had been so hot and cold. One minute she was leaning against me, inhaling my skin, and the next moment she was bolting out the door as if my touch had burned her.
But she wasn't the reason why I was finally ending this engagement with Fiona. It needed to be done for multiple reasons. and I was willing to take the consequences of her wrath. I wasn't going to marry her. Not in a million years. Not if she publicly shamed me, and not if my father disowned me.
I took a deep breath, inhaling the sweet scent of the bouquet I had brought for Claudia, Yellow roses, her favorite. "Let's just get this over with," I muttered, more to myself than my wolf.
1 climbed out of the car and made my way to the front door, my heart pounding with each step. The gravel crunched under my feet, the sound seeming unnaturally loud in the quiet morning air.
The butler, an elderly man named James, answered the door promptly. His face was a mask of polite indifference even though I had known him for years.
Mr. Brooks, welcome," he said with a sharp bow at the waist before stepping aside to let me in. "The brunch is being held in the dining room. Right this way, please!
I followed him through the bright hallways of Claudia's mansion, trying to calm my nerves. The house was silent save for
our footsteps echoing on the marble floors. Paintings of Claudia's ancestors lined the walls, and though the large windows let in the bright sunlight through the sheer curtains, I felt like they were staring at me. As we approached the dining room, I could hear the soft murmur of voices and the clink of silverware inside. The smell of coffee and freshly baked pastries wafted through the air, making my stomach growl despite my nerves.
The butler pushed open the doors without preamble. "Mr. Edwin Brooks has arrived, madam," he announced, gesturing for
me to enter.
I stepped into the room, the sudden brightness of the sun-filled space momentarily dazzling me. My eyes adjusted quickly. and I saw that, blissfully, the brunch was small-just Claudia and one other person, whose back was turned. Not Fiona, unless she had dyed her hair black lately.Content is © by NôvelDrama.Org.
I offered Claudia-who was sitting at the head of the table-a polite nod and a smile as I entered.
"Claudia." I said, extending the bouquet, "it's nice to see you"
But as the other person turned to look at me, my eyes landed on a face I wasn't expecting to see. My breath caught in my throat, my heart s**g a beat.
The bouquet slipped from my suddenly numb fingers, hitting the floor with a soft thud.
