“Hasn’t your sister been missing for ages? What does it have to do with our family?”
His gaze towards Jessie was laced with contempt, seemingly casting verdicts from a superior position. “Jessie, amidst your enjoyment of widespread adoration, my sister is enduring unimaginable suffering. Feel free to conjecture as you please. I won’t unveil the reality. I desire for you to dwell in constant dread, to taste the torment my sister endured!”
Chase entered the car with an icy demeanour and departed with a final statement, “I anticipate your presence in court tomorrow at nine.”
Jessie rushed to catch up, pounding on the car door, “Please clarify, what has occurred with your sister?”
The car accelerated away, leaving her to slump heavily onto the ground.
Through the rearview mirror, Chase observed the collapsed figure with a stoic
countenance.
Warren, the driver, seemed apprehensive. “Mr. Thompson, it appears Mrs. Thompson has lost consciousness. Shall we escort her to the hospital?”
Chase cast him a frigid stare. “Are you concerned for her?”
Warren had been with Chase for quite a while and was aware of his previous high. esteem for Jessie. However, ever since he returned from identifying the body, his demeanour had undergone a stark transformation.
Understanding this to be a private family affair, Warren opted not to delve deeper.. He dutifully steered the car away.
As the car moved further away, Chase’s disdain for the unmoving woman. deepened as he observed her through the rearview mirror.
It had been some time, yet she appeared to have honed her ability to feign illness.
Despite being raised in privilege, Jessie had undergone rigorous physical training under Peter’s guidance from a young age to deter any potential bullying.
It was perplexing how a woman as sturdy as an ox, holding a black belt in Taekwondo and a coventh–darras in bickhoving could cuccumb tå fainting co

To Chase, Jessie appeared to be nothing more than a performer seeking financial gain. Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
With this understanding, he icily turned his gaze away, refusing to acknowledge her existence any further.
As Chase’s car disappeared from view, Jessie felt her eyelids weighing down until she drifted into unconsciousness.
The never–ending rainfall appeared to reflect the world’s hostility directed at her.
She considered that death might be a better option.
Surrounded by deception, she found herself with nothing to hold on to.
When she awoke, she discovered herself in an unfamiliar room. The comforting glow of soft yellow light chased away the shadows, and the room’s warmth embraced her like a gentle spring breeze.
“You’re awake.”
Jessie blinked her eyes open to meet John’s gentle gaze. “John, did you save me?”
“I saw you fainting by the roadside on my way back from work, so I brought you here. I had the servant change your clothes as you were completely drenched.”
His gaze was clear, free from any hint of ulterior motives.
“Thank you, John.”
“I’ve made some soup for you, but let’s start with some warm water first.”
Jessie got up from the bed, saying, “No need to trouble yourself. I won’t be a bother to you at this hour.”
As she stepped onto the floor, her fragile body nearly faltered. John quickly moved to support her, the faint aroma of laundry detergent surrounding him.
The scent brought back memories of the detergent used in her home, the very same fragrance Chase used to wear.

“You’re still weak. If you want to ensure your well–being, don’t push yourself too hard. Think about it for your dad’s sake, John gently advised.
Jessie’s eyes, once void of hope, now sparkled with a hint of it. “Then I’ll count on you.”
After finishing the soup and taking some stomach medicine, her dominal discomfort began to lessen.
John brought up chemotherapy again, emphasising recent medical advancements.
“You’re in the mid to late stages, but there’s hope. Even some late–stage cancer patients have pulled through. Believe in yourself. Chemotherapy can be really effective.”
Jessie lowered her head. I have a medical background. I know the pros and cons of chemotherapy
John continued. “The chances of recovery after chemotherapy and surgery are promising. Though there are notable side effects, if you can stay confident enough to endure..
Jessie raised her head slowly, tears brimming in her eyes. She fought to contain them, her voice trembling as she spoke, “But I can’t take it anymore.”
As he observed her red eyes, John found it hard to offer words of solace, feeling a weight in his heart.
After a moment of silence, he asked, “Jessie, isn’t there anyone else in your life who means a lot to you?”
She hesitated for a moment before answering. “Only my dad.”
“In that case, you have to keep going for your dad’s sake,” he urged.
Jessie managed a wry smile. “Thank you, John. I feel better now. I won’t bother you
anymore.”
