Mr. President’s 46
Chapter 46
Mercedes felt triumphant, as she sat in her car and drove to the penthouse. Griffin and Angie were still sleeping but her presence woke them. “Where did you go?” Griffin asked, seeing her dressed casually with her car key in hand.
“To see Nathan,” she said truthfully.
Griffin was furious. “After all, he did to you?” He didn’t hide the anger in his voice but was amazed when he heard her next words.
“I ended things with him. Here,” she pressed the dollar note into Griffin’s palm. Both Griffin and Angie were shocked. Nathan Legend let her go without any conditions. Perhaps he would accept and marry Jane after all.
“So you’ll return the car and we have to move out of here?” Angie asked. Mercedes hadn’t thought about that. She was so hasty. If she pulled out of the deal, then she should naturally return his gifts, right? Thinking through everything was so exhausting.
“I will return it but not today. I need to sleep.” She sat on the bed when Griffin proposed,
“I rented an apartment a few blocks away. You girls should move in with me.”
He had enjoyed so much benevolence from Mercedes so naturally, it was just fair for him to help when Mercedes was now out of job. “We will,” she firmly responded. Angie felt slightly uncomfortable, not because she still had feelings for Griffin but she felt pity for Nathan. She also felt that everything wasn’t entirely his fault and the most important thing was, he loved Mercedes so much. In order not to sound suspicious, she kept her thoughts to herself.
“And Merce, I will get you a job,” Griffin said. He was now CEO so it wouldn’t be difficult for him to get her a job. She could even work at J & J if she wanted. He just had to speak with Martha.
Mercedes nodded but didn’t speak. She couldn’t believe that it was over between them. Besides, why didn’t Nathan try to put up another strategy to keep her like he always did? Was he tired of her or he had agreed to marry Jane? Nothing sunk well with her. Nathan didn’t fight and let her go so easily, it also hurt. Would she miss him? She couldn’t tell but at least, she would never be humiliated again. Not by Jane or Nathan’s dad. She would regain her self respect.
But what would she tell her mum and brother? Her brother had eventually idolized Nathan. She would tell them the truth. She had to.
The days moved fast and Monday arrived. Mercedes not only had to return the car but also send her resignation. Try as she did, the internet on her phone wouldn’t connect so she would just use her office laptop after she returns Nathan’s car keys.
She drove to the car park earlier than usual, not wanting to see any staff members. She didn’t think she could control herself if anyone mocked her. She might just commit murder. She would also send her resignation and wait for Nathan to arrive before she left but she saw Nathan’s car parked where it was since Saturday when she broke up with him.
Guilt instantly swelled inside her. Could it be that Nathan never went home? How could she tell that something as small as a break–up would hit him so hard? She quickly shoved it off and stepped out of her car but a familiar voice sounded a little distance ahead of her. Jane was on the phone, leaning on her car with a basket in one hand. It seemed like she brought Nathan food.
Mercedes’s heart tightened and she wanted to go back into her car and drive away. Perhaps this wasn’t the right time but she heard her name, which made her stop to eavesdrop.
“Come on, mum, the Mercedes of a bitch will never be near him again.” Mercedes balled her hands into fists but remained hiding.
“I’m certain mum, I gave her the worst embarrassment, stamping it with a slap, just as you taught me.”
“Don’t worry, Nathan will never know that little Timmy isn’t his son.” Now, Mercedes‘ heart was shattering. She could only feel pity for Nathan. For all the sacrifices he made, the child wasn’t his.
“I already told you, I took care of him the moment I got pregnant. No one will come and claim little Timmy.”
“Nathan’s dad,”
Mercedes had heard enough and she couldn’t let herself be seen for eavesdropping. She tiptoed and hid beside one of the cars till she saw Jane entering the elevator. Tears sprawled down her cheeks throughout her drive home. What if she hadn’t arrived in time, no one would know the truth. Jane was satan himself disguised as a woman. Mercedes wondered what Jane would do to her if she found out that she knew so much. And who did she take care of and how? Since Jane was going to see Nathan, she had to give herself time. Now, she had an edge over Jane but recalling what happened when she told Griffin about Penelope and Nathan’s warning, she thought it wise to not tell Nathan. He might think she was desperate and making up stories. Wasn’t it Nathan who advised her to never spread gossip? Besides, she had no proof. It was so sudden, she didn’t record it. When she got to the penthouse, Angie had finished packing.
“I’m not leaving anymore, Angie,” she sounded sad but there was still some excitement brewing around her.

Chapter 46
“Merce, what’s the matter? He didn’t let you resign?” Angie was worried but Mercedes had no intention of telling this secret to anyone. It was her secret weapon. She was the one who faced the embarrassment and she was going to fight back squarely with it.
“I didn’t see him but I’m going back,” Mercedes said and began taking off her clothes.
“Merce, he already gave you your freedom,” Angie reminded her.
Mercedes flipped and began yelling. “Then why doesn’t it feel like it? I can’t live without him. I made a mistake.”
Suddenly, she calmed down. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting. Please go back to work and return Griffin’s keys. You can take the car.” Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Angie couldn’t understand her but having her own share of a heartbreak, she somewhat understood her and said, “no, I’ll get a cab.”
Mercedes didn’t try to force her. She already had so much on her plate. Nathan had told her never to return if she left so how was she supposed to go back? Her thoughts were all over the place when she had a quick shower. One thing was certain. She was going to get revenge. She was going to hit Jane so hard, she would regret being born. She would go back to that office and even if Jane was there, she would plead with Nathan to take her back.
Luckily, Jane’s car wasn’t there when she went back but Nathan’s was. His office was still locked but she had access to hers, which meant that Jane hadn’t been able to see Nathan. She used her office access to get to him. Nathan’s office was dark and when she turned on the light, she almost fainted.
