Chapter 229
Before she could finish her sentence, Everett hung up the phone and turned to face her.
His voice was steady but cold. "Grandpa's in critical condition. We need to get to the hospital."
Selena was taken aback. Just three days ago, she had visited Josh at the hospital, and he seemed to be doing fine. How could things have gotten so bad so quickly...
Now wasn't the time for questions, though. They both quickly changed and rushed out the door, heading to the hospital.
Everett was unusually silent on the drive, his foot pressing hard on the gas pedal as they weaved through traffic at breakneck speed.
Even though his face was a mask, showing no signs of what he was feeling, Selena could sense Everett's anxiety.
Her heart ached in response.
At a red light, she gently placed her hand over his, speaking softly, "Don't worry, it's going to be okay."
A flicker of emotion passed through Everett's eyes as he glanced at Selena, meeting her gentle gaze.
She didn't say anything more; it was a silent gesture of comfort. Everett gave a small, wry smile. He thought her words were naive-what could they possibly do in the face of life and death? Yet, oddly enough, they did bring him some comfort. He didn't reply and just pinched her cheek lightly, a warm gesture.
When the light turned green, Everett refocused on the road, though unaware that something had quietly taken root in his heart at that moment.
At the hospital, the red light above the operating room signaled that surgery was underway.
Everett stood by the window, hands in his pockets, listening as the nurse updated him on Josh's condition.
The nurse said, "He was fine before bed last night and even sang a bit of opera. His routine was completely
normal. He did mention his food tasted off a couple of days ago, but I've been following the meal plan strictly. I'm not sure why he suddenly got worse in the middle of the night. I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett."
Everett gave a slight nod, acknowledging he understood.
He trusted the nurse had been diligent, and with Josh's health declining, anything was possible.
He glanced at the operating room door, where Josh had been for hours. Everett pressed his lips tightly together. His brow furrowed with a
shadow of worry that wouldn't lift.

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, placing one between his lips, ready to light it. But catching sight of Selena standing nearby, he paused.
"I'm going for a smoke," he said softly, giving Selena's head a gentle pat before heading to the smoking area.
Selena watched his tall figure retreat without stopping him.
She understood the turmoil he was feeling, the anxiety of possibly losing someone so dear, and how he needed an outlet.
With her hands supporting her forehead, Selena felt her own heart in suspense.
Josh treated her like his own granddaughter, and she felt the same way. If he didn't pull through this... she couldn't bear to think about it. After what felt like an eternity, Everett returned, sitting down next to Selena and leaning against the cold wall.

smoked quite a bit. While she
usually disliked his smoking, she
understood it was a way to manage stress in times like these.
For the first time, she didn't mind the smoke. Her slender arms slowly wrapped around Everett's lean waist, resting her cheek against his chest.
She wanted to let him know he wasn't alone; she was right there with him.
Everett's body gave a slight shiver, and he lowered his eyes to look at her head nestled against him.
