Chapter 24 Business Is Business
Hier Clarissa turned to laer apartinent, slie bolled and changedlier clothes. The discomfort caused by
the down dually faded away
She lay on hier bed and thought of the incident, gelting increasingly angry
How could her brother do suchialling? Ile did not care about their mother and even set hiis biological
sister up. Moreover, Damien would not listen to her explanation Clarissa did not know what to do.
Shortly after, Lily came back from work. She asked worriedly, “Are you okay, Clarissa?”
Clarissa selt llmp.
“I’m okay. What’s wrong?”
Lily recalled the rumors she had heard from her colleagues earlier. She worried that her best friend was
being bullied.
Hence, she quickly said, “You… Didn’t get into a fight with President Lawrence, right? I heard a woman
was looking for him at the company just now. He even let her use his private elevator

Lily’s words were less offensive than what was said by her colleagues
“A regular employee like Clarissa had forgotten her place just because she sat in President Lawrence’s
car twice. She should take a lood look at herself in the mirror.”
“That’s right. The president and Miss York make such a good couple. If President Lawrence wants a
partner, he should choose someone elegant and intelligent like Miss York They even took his private
clevator together. Clarissa never used it before, right? Looks like she’ll never get the chance.”
Clarissa was slighty surprised when she heard what Lily had to say. She did not expect the woman in
the picture to make an appearance so quickly.
Madelynn and Damien clearly had a past together.
Clarissa felt regretful. Damien would surely end the agreement ahead of time since Madelynn had
returned. She would not be able to earn more money. Moreover, she would not get to see Damien’s
eyes up close anymore.
Those eyes made her lecl warm.
The next day, Howard went to the president’s office to hand in the finance department’s Stars of New
East” name list for that year.
Every year, New East Corporation would choose candidates for the “Stars of New East” from the batch
of interns who got promoted to permanent positions. The winner would be the company’s talent reserve
and given priority training to join higher management in the future.
Howard was the one who made the final decision. That year, Clarissa was the only intern who got
promoted within the finance department. Whether she was part of the “Stars of New East or not would
depend on Howard’s arrangement.
Nonetheless, Howard wanted to test Damien’s attitude toward Clarissa first. There were several rumors
of them breaking up. He was unsure of what to do. Damien glanced at the form and said, “Business is
business.” Howard replied, “Okay. I understand.”
Clarissa took Nicole Brown’s spot, which made Howard unhappy. Nicole was skillful in dealing with
people. She knew exactly what Howard was thinking, so it was easy for them to collaborate. On the
other hand, Clarissa was a meticulous person. She would insist on fixing minor things that could be
easily brushed off. Having an intern like that in the finance department was good, but what if she were
to join the higher management? Howard would not be able to get away with anything.
Thus, Howard removed Clarissa’s name from the list.
