Chapter 151
Katrina had been in their house for a week, too scared to go out on her own. Her daughter, Clarence, also didn't want to leave her mother, not even going to her room. Maria was also especially alert as she kept checking on every door locks and windows, even with Kylan present.
Her father had called numerous times, checking on them regularly. The news about Katrina's stalker was also all over the media and people, especially their fans, were watching out for them like hawks. With Katrina's pregnancy that became so fragile and vulnerable because of the incidents, she was adviced to stay at home and bed rest. No strenuous activities, not even intimate moments with Kylan. If she doesn't improve, she will have to undergo a C-section. And so, Katrina was relieved from both her duties from the bakery and at home.
The whole family was tensed for a week, unable to work comfortably as they knew that the killer was out there, waiting for a moment to strike.
Katrina sat in the living room with Clarence and Theo, their big, curious eyes, looking at her as they listened to the storybook Katrina had been reading aloud. Nearby, sat in the dining room, discussing something with Vanessa, Officer Garrett Hale, and Ryan, their voices low but serious. Though she couldn't make out their words, the tension in the air was palpable.
Katrina focused on her kids, running her fingers gently through her daughter's soft curls. For a moment, the world felt normal, safe... until Vanessa's sharp voice cut through the quiet.
"Kate," Vanessa said, stepping into the room with an urgency that sent a chill down Katrina's spine. Katrina looked up, concern etching across her face. "What's going on?"
Vanessa looked at the two kids before she offered a faint, reassuring smile. "Can you come over? We have something to discuss with you present."
Katrina nodded, her heart pounding. She turned to Clarence. "Be a good girl and look after your brother for me, okay?" She looked up to see Maria coming closer to take over. "Maria..."
Maria caught her hand and offered it a squeeze. "They'll be fine. Go."
Katrina pursed her lips and nodded, following Vanessa to the dining room.
"We've been discussing with Kylan and went over witness statements. Including yours. We think we've identified the person behind all of this."
Katrina walked over to the table covered in papers, pictures and evidence. Every one didn't look happy at all. Vanessa gave her a weak smile. "Alright, I need you to sit and take a look at some pictures for me, okay?"
"Okay..."
The dining room table was a battlefield of papers, photographs, and crime scene evidence. Vanessa
gestured for Katrina to take a seat while Ryan stood silently beside her, arms crossed and his gaze heavy with concern.
"I need you to look at these pictures," Vanessa explained, sliding six photographs toward Katrina, each placed face down with numbers on the back. "One of these is the person we believe is responsible. We've prepared these with partial overlays so you can focus on the mouth and eyes. Take your time and let us know if you recognize anyone."
Katrina's heart pounded even more as she nodded. "Okay."
Vanessa flipped the photographs over, revealing faces she'd never wanted to see again. Each image stirred an unpleasant memory, but her eyes quickly locked onto one in particular. Her breath caught, and her chest tightened as the image of a familiar face stared back at her.
"It's him," Katrina whispered, her hand trembling as she tapped the photograph. "That's the man I saw at the hospital. His smile... his eyes. There's no doubt."
Vanessa stared at the picture for a moment before lifting it and showing it to the others. "She picked him... the one all the evidence points to. We have him. We finally have him!"
Katrina glanced at Kylan, whose entire body trembled with barely contained fury. The tension in his jaw and the fire in his eyes made her heart clench. She turned her gaze to Ryan and Vanessa, her voice breaking. "Who is he? Who did this to us?"
Ryan stepped forward, gently taking Katrina's hands in his own. His expression was heavy, laced with empathy and a reluctance to speak. "This is going to come as a shock, Katrina, and it's going to hurt. Kylan needed some time to process this, but..." He trailed off, the weight of what he was about to say pressing down on everyone in the room.
Vanessa turned the picture and
removed the mask overlay, revealing the face of the man beneath. Katrina clamped her hand over her mouth, as shock rippled through her entire body. Her knees felt weak, her chest tightened, and the urge to vomit, scream, and cry all at once threatened to overwhelm her. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Kylan rushed to her side, wrapping her in his arms as she broke down. He whispered her name over and over, his voice low and soothing, trying to anchor her amidst the chaos in her mind. His embrace was strong, almost suffocating, but Katrina clung to him desperately, needing his strength to keep from collapsing.
Through her tears, her gaze shiftednoveldrama
back to the picture of Dr. Lee Hanes. Her mind reeled. How could it be him? How could the man they had trusted so completely-the man who had held her hand through her pregnancy, the man who promised to deliver her daughter in a few months time, and even helped them after the bite attack-be the same person responsible for so much
pain?
It all made sense now. Every chilling moment, every calculated action pointed to him. Yet, the realization cut deeper than she could have imagined. The perfect image of Dr. Lee Hanes shattered before her eyes, replaced by the horrifying truth. This man, who once seemed so kind and dependable, was nothing more than a monster.
