Chapter 43
Rose smiled at her father, before replying. "Really? Something happened? What happened, father?" She asked, faining cluelessness about it even though she already knew what was happening. 'This damn, sly, cunning vixen.' Beatrice caused inwardly.
Already believing that it was Rose's fault, William glowered at Rose. "Rose, since you don't know what happened, I will tell you. You upset your mum yesterday, so apologize to her right now." William demanded. 'Huh. Aren't you so blind? Why do you believe whatever your cunning mistress says?' Rose almost rolled her eyes at William.
She found his behavior so irritating that it suddenly triggered a memory she had buried. Just four months after her mother tragically died, her father married Beatrice (now Mrs. Gray.) and her two children, Sophia and her younger brother, moved in.
She was shocked to see how her father was so quick to marry another woman but what she found shocking was the fact that Sophia was only a year younger than her, if not months. Which meant that her father had kept his mistress for years even when her mom was still alive.
Did they see my mother as a stumbling block from the very beginning?!
Sharp pain and a sense of resentment filled up her heart and grabbed her like a giant's grip, refusing to let go.
But she had to collect herself soon and disguised her emotions. She looked down at the table so as not to meet her father's eyes, and replied as calmly as she could. "Dad, it wasn't me. It was Sophia......"
Patiently and gently, she explained what happened and deliberately detailed and exaggerated the parts where her step-mother and Sophia completely lost face. Cleverly, she pretended to feel shame about it.
Rose knew her father very well. He is the type of man that cares about fame and the family reputation more than anything. He couldn't stand being humiliated.
William was stunned when he heard Rose and threw his wife a questioning look as if to say, "Is this true? Why didn't you tell me?"
Beatrice lowered her head, wishing she could defend herself, but she knew all that Rose had said was true, even though it was exaggerated a bit.
She knew he would find out sooner or later if she lied to him now. After all, they are one of the wealthy families in California and what had happened at the party would spread and it would be very bad if he heard what really happened from people. She could only look at her husband helplessly, almost in tears.
Seeing her face, William could only just sigh and simply gave in. He knew she was scared that he would lash out at her but he would never say a harsh word to her.
Instead, he turned back to look at Rose. "I've heard all you have to say, but you should have been a good daughter and sister and helped your family." William reprimanded Rose, though his voice was a bit gentler than before.
Rose sneered inside at his words. 'Mum?! Sister?! Bullshit. They are never my family. They robbed me of everything I had. They even took my life. That's what you call family?!' she thought, her grip around the fork tightened a bit. She didn't show a tiny bit of her real thoughts, but nodded and agreed with her father, "Yes, dad. You are right. I'm sorry." She said gently.
Beatrice narrowed her brow and glanced at Rose suspiciously, then smiled lovingly at her husband "It wasn't a big deal. Rose's still young. Please don't be mad at her."
She could feel something was different from Rose, and she had to be more careful.
Rose watched and listened to Beatrice carefully. 'Impressively repulsive. Who are you? Are you a chameleon or something?' She nearly laughed but knew it would draw the people's attention to her. William quickly changed his attitude and looked at Rose. "Your mum is so protective of you. Rose, don't forget how much your mum loves you."
'What a sweet loving couple you two are!' Rose thought sarcastically.
She looked into their eyes with great sincerity, "No, I will never forget."
It was a vow she made to herself.
'Yes, I won't. Never forget how you have treated me. Never forget to seek revenge.'
She bit her lower lip slightly and said apologetically, "Mother, I'm sorry. I should have behaved better yesterday. Please don't be angry with me. I'm still your good daughter, no?"
Beatrice felt a bit relieved. Softly she replied, "Of course, you are. You are my favorite girl, as always. Don't be silly. I'll always love you."
Seeing Rose's calm and smiling
face, Beatrice let out a calming sigh. 'I must be thinking too much. She seems normal. Nothing unusual.
What happened yesterday must net
have just been accidental. She's nothing but a naïve stupid girl. She can't be that smart.' She thought to herself, feeling a bit relieved.
'We have had her in control since the beginning. She's little more than a puppet. If it wasn't for the money, she would have died long ago alongside her crazy mother.
"Now that it's all settled. Rose when are you returning back to abroad. We both agreed that you'd come back to the country after you finish your examination, you shouldn't be here lazing around?" William finally asked the main concern of Rose's visit.
Rose paused for a few moments

raising her head up to look at her father. He was right, that was what he had discussed with the Rose who hadn't been reborn yet, but now that her adult soul was consuming her you get body things were different.
"We did discuss it, but I have a change of mind now. I have gotten to like California ever since I've arrived. It's refreshing here and fun to spend time with my FAMILY Rose replied calmly, making sure to emphasize the word 'Family at the end of her sentence.
"So, what are you trying to say?" William frowned slightly at Rose's response. He already knew what she was going to say next but he wanted her to say it herself.
"I'm saying that I'm no longer going to study abroad. I want to stay permanently here." She casually answered without hesitation.
