KNIGHT
I couldn’t believe this was happening. When Kailin screamed no, I knew she had just figured out something she loathed. Then, Dane sniffed the air, and they stared at each other. I knew at that moment they were mates.
I didn’t know how McKaye would handle this. I would be immensely happy for Kailin that she finally found her mate, but it was unsettling considering what Dane did for a living.
“No fucking way.” McKaye roared at my face, His voice piercing my ears. “That bloody fucking murderer?”
“Lower your tone and control yourself, Mac, or I will throw you out of my office.” I pointed at the door. “If you keep yelling at me, I swear I will lock you down in the bunker.”
“How are you so cool about this?” He was still yelling, glaring at me.
“Get the fuck out. I don’t have time for this.” I glared back, challenging him, who had the authority here.
“He’s not good for her.” He finally calmed down a bit, but I could still feel him shaking. “He will corrupt my sister.”This is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
“Don’t throw your anger at me. I’m not the Moon Goddess, for fuck sake.” We both loved Kailin. She was like a sister I never had. As much as I wanted to keep her away from Dane, they were mates, and I knew how it could devastate them both.
“This is a mistake. Are you sure he’s her mate?”
I blew a breath as I rested my back on my chair and gave him my bored look face. “I don’t know. Did you ask your sister?”
“Yes. She’s with Vana.” He scratched his head, and when he did that, he knew he was losing it. “Apparently, her stupid wolf was the first to recognize that fucking murderer.”
“Don’t use that word. He’s also your sister’s mate and a loyal werewolf. That character is something rare to find nowadays.”
“So you want me to bring him a fruit basket and welcome him with open arms?”
“If I can’t talk sense to you. You better leave this room. I’m trying to contact our allies, and you are wasting my time. Go and find your sister and convince her to reject Dane. We’ll see how your sister reacts to that until she finally gives up and kills herself.”
“I’m sorry.” He swallowed hard. He must have remembered what happened to my parents. It was horrible- a nightmare. I couldn’t say my mother was weak, but she could have fought for her life for my sake, but she chose the easy way out.
“Now. Are we done?”
“I just feel terrible for K.”
“Don’t be. I’ll try finding out who he is. There must be a reason why he chose this job. You can’t judge someone by what pays his bill. Besides, he works for the council. So if you are planning on murdering him, think twice.” It wasn’t a threat. It was a warning because I knew what someone like Dane could do.
The door swung open. Nirvana shifted her gaze from me to McKaye. “Should we come back later?”
“No. If he can’t stand being with Dane in the same room, then he can just walk out.”
Nirvana came in first, holding McKaye’s arm. “Stay. I need you here.”
He nodded, breathing through his nose, his glare pinning straight right at Dane, who followed Victor inside. Dylan, Luka, and Kaleb joined us with Uncle Lennox and Zarah. Kailin stomped inside and stood beside Nirvana.
I rose from my seat as Victor and Uncle sat on the couch. Dane remained standing behind his boss.
“To those who haven’t met Dane, he works at the Council, and he’s also here for Kailin.”
McKaye and Kailin could have been more impressed with my introduction.
“What do you mean?” Uncle Lennox asked, clearly interested.
“Dane, I’d like to introduce you to one of the elders. Lennox Blackwell, my uncle, and Kailin and McKaye’s father.”
He looked shocked but offered his hand at Lennox. “Pleasure to meet you, sir.”
My uncle was still confused but shook Dane’s hand. “Pleasure is mine, Dane.”
“He’s Kailin’s mate.”
“Oh, that’s even better. I have a new son,” he said with a laugh.
“Not for long,” Kailin muttered under her breath, but everyone heard it anyway.
“Behave, or I will lock you both in the bunker,” I told her through our link.
“I’d rather die and shoot myself with a silver bullet than be with that man,” she said before I blocked her.
“May I?” Victor raised his hand, catching our attention.
“Of course.”
“I know all of you are probably planning to kill me and Dane. I just want you to know that Alpha Knight and I agreed to work together. The Council’s resources will be at your disposal.”
“You’re doing this to clean your name and the council after failing your attempt to stop the virus from spreading. That’s why you have no choice but to put a bounty on Nirvana’s head.”
“McKaye, if you can’t keep your mouth shut and show some respects to the head council and your father, I suggest you leave this office.”
The room went silent.
“We all are desperate to end this plague, and that’s not only our problem. Whether we like it or not, the entire world is on the brink of collapsing. We need every help we can get. Cyrius is unbeatable for a reason. He’s that powerful. If you can kill him yourself, go ahead. I’m not stopping you. I want this plague to end as much as the council members out there. Either the werewolf council will benefit from this. I don’t care as long as the killings and devastation end. If you are against my plan, the door is open.” I motioned to the door before I crossed my arms over my chest.
When none of them broke the silence, I looked at Victor. “Please continue.”
“I want to address the elephant in the room. I know this is terrible timing, and Dane is not the mate you dream of, Kailin, but he’s a good man. He took this job not because he enjoys killing, but you might not know this: one or two of you would have been killed if not for him. And you are not even aware he’d been watching you all from the people who tried to eliminate you from existence.”
I gave a slight nod of appreciation to Dane.
“His parents died in a pack attack when he was only a kid. I took him in and treated him as my own. Sometimes, my son got jealous of him. He became an enforcer. He also works in a government agency and a secret organization I’m not at liberty to disclose. That’s how he’s good at what he does. He doesn’t just kill people for fun. Despite how you despise him for his job, his morality is never tainted by a desire to get his parents’ revenge and never overshadowed by his personal gain. He follows a certain code and never breaks it. He only eliminates people who leave nothing but devastation in their wake. And the world would be much better without those kinds of people. Judge me for my actions, but Dane is following my order.”
“He’s a member of Obsidian, is he?”
I caught Dane looking at me, surprised that I had known such a secret society that only operated in the shadows.
“What Obsidian?” Even my uncle didn’t know about them. I only heard it from Califf when they thought they were fighting an organization of assassins, but only Aciano used that name for his personal agenda.
“That’s not something someone should advertise. Whatever you hear inside this room can never come out.”
“Fine. I can work with him, but that’s all,” Kailin said forcibly.
Dane’s face lit up with hope.
“Since we all set aside our differences,” Victor started, “did you find the weapon?”
