Chapter 53: 53- Surreal Dreams
Varys sat beside the bed as a chorus of beeps drove him insane. But as much as he hated them, those beeps meant Hope was alive. She was still fighting. The doctor looked at him and nodded. "She'll be fine, she's had a tough experience, and I worry about the trauma it might have mentally caused her more than her health. The poison has been counteracted."
The rock that had been crushing his chest slowly dissolved. "And your other patient?"
He sighed. "That one is a tougher case. It's not often I'm grateful for a fever to that degree, but I have to say, I think that one saved his life. But, I just don't know if he'll ever wake up."
Varys nodded. "Don't let her know that part."
"He has a good chance because the fever helped slow that poison down, but I don't want to give you false hope."
"He'll wake up," Varys replied. "He's got a job to do, and if he wants to work for me, there will be no slacking."
"Since her vitals are okay at the moment, I'm moving on. If you need anything, just buzz the nurse's station."
Varys watched the doctor go before he took Hope's hand in his and squeezed it gently. "Hey you, there's no more danger to you now. Your nightmares are all over. You can wake up and come back to me anytime."
Varys was exhausted himself and he still wanted to mourn the loss of Marco. However, he wasn't about to do anything without seeing Hope's beautiful eyes one more time before he allowed sleep to claim him. The nightmares that usually haunted him were going to be far worse after a day like today.
Hope's hand moved in his and a moment later her eyes fluttered open and she stared at him. "Are you a dream?" she whispered her words slurred with sleep.
"Completely real," he assured her.
She smiled at him, a goofy happy smile. Her medical care was the very best, even down to the pain medicine they were pumping through her veins. He'd give up his entire fortune to cure her. Besides, he'd get it all back when he picked up Ethan's empire. He'd go back to where they left him and cut his fucking head off to mail to anyone else who tried to lay claim.
Hope giggled. "I always dreamed of it, you know."
He turned his attention back to her and quirked a brow. "Dreamed of what?"
She grinned. "Our wedding."
Varys was a little jealous of her and the care she was getting by this point. He wanted to have a chance to dream about their wedding, though he was certain his dream would just burn into a nightmare. "Want to tell me about it?"
She nodded. "You were there, and I was there," she giggled again. "And Uncle Vincent, and Max, and Stella, even Mom and Dad. And we were all so happy. The cake was huge! You got me a cake in the shape of a diamond. Who does that? It was too big to eat but we had fun trying. And we danced until my feet hurt."
"Sounds like it's going to be a fun time." Varys kissed her fingers. "If you want a cake in the shape of a diamond, you're going to have it."
"I just want to be happy," Hope answered instead as she snuggled against her pillow. "I just want a husband that loves me, and doesn't try to sleep with my bestest best friend in front of me."
"Never," Varys agreed. "Hope, you're the only woman I'll ever need."
She tilted her head and studied him with narrowed eyes. "Say, Varys," she mumbled.
He leaned closer. "What is it?"
"Yeah, I think that'll work." She nodded to herself.
"Don't let me in suspense, you, what will work?" Varys demanded. He wanted to growl at the woman for giving him the run-around. She had the most mischievous smile he'd ever seen on her.
She cocked her head at him. "Our kids of course!"
Kids? Varys blinked. That had not been the answer he expected. Kids? It wasn't that he didn't want them, eventually. But he didn't want to share Hope anytime soon. Still, she was drugged, maybe it wouldn't hurt to humor her just this once. "What about them?"
"They're going to be so pretty," she gushed. "At least the boys will be. Do you know how handsome you are?" she scrunched her nose. "I bet you don't. How many women have you slept with after you pretended to die?" she demanded. All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
"Uh," Varys stared at her. She didn't look drugged. She looked serious and the happy smile was gone from her lips. She was glaring at him now. "I didn't pretend to die."
"You did, and you left me all alone and my heart broke and I ended up with that nasty Ethan cause he said he could make me forget." She grabbed his hand and squeezed it tight. "And he lied! I never forgot. I could never forget. We were supposed to be together, always."
Varys shook his head at his wife-to-be and kissed her knuckles again. "We're going to be together always now, love. Nothing is going to take me away from you again."
She beamed. "You better keep that promise, Varys Flint. Flint, flint... Hope Flint?" She screwed up her nose again. "Does that sound weird? Hope Flint? Maybe I should keep my maiden name."
"Get some more rest you little minx," Varys scolded. How long had it been since he'd smiled like this? He just loved this woman so much. Even drugged, she made his day.
"Do I have to?" she whined. "Oh, but wait if I go to sleep I can see our wedding again, and our kids!"
"Yes, so you need to get to sleep right now," Varys encouraged as he kissed her soft and sweet. She was so cute, there was no way he could resist the lure of her lips.
"Love you," she whispered before she fell back over and started snoring.
Varys chuckled at her again before shaking his head. She'd messed all her covers up and they were all over the bed, and not on her. He pulled them right up to her chin and tucked them around her so she couldn't throw them off in her sleep. "I love you too," he whispered with a kiss to her still bruised nose. "Always."
